An IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) is a healthcare professional who specialises in clinical management of lactation and Breastfeeding. IBCLCs have a unique body of knowledge and skill to provide breastfeeding care in routine and high-risk situations. IBCLC’s are internationally recognised.
IBCLC’s have extensive initial training, and then ongoing education and recertification is required every 5 years to ensure that every IBCLC is up to date with their knowledge and is able to provide the best care possible to their clients.
There are many avenues to seek support for breastfeeding; however an IBCLC is the gold standard in lactation management. They will offer a mum and baby a complete and full assessment in regards to the emotional and physical aspect of the breastfeeding mother dyad. The IBCLC is the only one trained and skilled in seeing the whole picture and specialises in infant and maternal assessment and breastfeeding management.
Eve Coote is a very experienced IBCLC, and runs her company Best Start Lactation Consultancy out of FitRight HQ. An appointment with her will provide support and access to evidence based information on all areas of lactation.
